Structurally, the Casino was the same as the ES, with a thinline, double-cutaway hollow body. A vibrato was optional.
Cosmetically, both models had single-ply binding on the top, back, and fingerboard, pearl dot fingerboard inlays, and an inlaid peghead logo with no other ornamental peghead inlay.
The Casino was offered in sunburst or Royal Tan finish while the ES was offered in sunburst or natural. In early , while the Beatles were in India, studying transcendental meditation with The Maharishi and friends, including Donovan.
Donovan convinced the trio to sand the finish off their instruments, telling them how a guitar sounds better without a heavy finish.

Skip to main content. As more players find out about the high quality and reasonable prices of the new models, they'll wise up and Korean prices will fall.
I think just prior to the switch to Chinese production in , the Koreans improved, for whatever reason, but they're still not any better than the Chinese ones.
I see Epiphone as continually improving their products, and that hasn't stopped. Do you think the new trend of Chinese made Epiphones, inspired by their originals, will make the previously championed Korean models from Samick, Peerless and Unsung factories become less desirable?
My first Casino was a Peerless Casino and I'm thinking about buying another one now. I only want that Peerless Casino for sentimental reasons but I know for the same money I can get one of equally good build and better electronics which is more accurate to a 60s style Casino than the Peerless one and would have better resale value.
But compared to the newer trend of Chinese 60s tribute models, I think they are aesthetically less pleasing. I've owned dozens of Epi's over the years and think the Chinese are better.
As a buyer of both Korean and Chinese currently more Korean I am inclined to say that the new quality of the recent Chinese models would not stop me from buying a clean 90s Korean model.
I have 3 chinese Epi's. I have upgraded the electronics wiring, not pickups on most of my Korean models, but I also got most of them for under original cost.
Granted the early Chinese had their issues, but so did some Koreans. In my opinion, Korean or current Chinese are both good alternatives to their more expensive Gibson cousins.
As for whether the new quality would put me off of buying a clean Korean, I don't think so. The 90s Korean models will not be reproduced I doubt Epiphone will ever produce a "96 Period Correct Peerless Casino Reissue" Epiphone produced some great reissues and originals Del Rey, for one that I keep looking for and will buy.
I also keep looking at the new models which I like and will probably purchase depending on model. So I guess I might be one of those you could categorize as a true lover of Epiphone Guitars.
Now it seems as if the equation has flipped to some extent. The strengthening of pickups, switches, tuners, etc, has become apparent, but there have been many posts regarding spotty build quality from Gibson's Chinese factories.
And interestingly, this aspect of construction is completely in the hands of Gibson - exactly the stated rationale for pulling out of Korea of course along with cheaper labor!
The level of focus on QC will be up to Gibson. Take my '70s Guild Sc for example. I doubt it, but Used anythings are an interesting market. I have an '04 GDeluxe flametop It's a beautiful guitar, all black wonderful player - it had a fret job when I bought it used several years ago.
It's more mellow than my other Dot, which is a Chinese made Natural. It has a repaired neck break, but it also has Gibson 's installed, and I have replaced the bridge and TP with older versions, which I prefer.
I think the quality of the Chinese made Epiphones is extremely good.. I feel the 2 Dots are different, but I can't say one is really better - just different.
I really love them both. I'm still getting familiar with it, but the quality s certainly there.

Our first stop in Seattle was to Denny and Rennies, our cruising friends from Columbia several years ago — such a warm welcome. His first unaccompanied flight, we were so proud of him as he set off.
An interesting time for Huon also as this was the first instance when they have been separated — in the end the parents stressing more than the boys!
As we did last year, a magic several days down at Stretch Island in Southern Puget Sound, July 4 th fireworks, kayaking, crabbing etc with Huon happily being a shadow to 3 older boys — now one of a pack taking on all the fashions and actions of the older boys.
Plenty of activities in Seattle over the next 6 weeks along with a pleasant offer to stay in their house in Vancouver from other cruising friends we met in Costa Rica in , Gary and Jeanine from High 5 — they are taking their yacht down to La Paz, and Costa Baja Marina over the summer.
Just the odd other yacht floating around. Two weeks just getting back into the cruising mode as we are now tied to the marina most of the time.
The highlight was the diving with seals at Isla Los Islotes, where the seals where very happy to perform for the camera with an apple as a toy.
A really wonderful trip with excellent weather. Last weekend we visited La Duna for an evening with several of our local Mexican families. This rustic and very environmentally friendly resort provides a magic location just to chill and chat for the children and adults that went very late into the evening.
February was rather quite, school runs, Mel studying all rather domestic. I popped down to Barra Navidad, south of Puerto Vallarta to bring Princess 1 back to La Paz, as expected on the nose most of the way so, double the time taken to get down there, some 3 days for some miles much of the time at around 7 knots.
A few days later to Cabo San Lucas so she could be hauled out for her yearly maintenance. We had a magnificent week with our dear friends from Monaco, Poala, Antoine and Daniel their 6 year old son.
Our new old two car family made arrangements easy. Mel was also busy for a few days helping arrange provisions for a couple of large yachts, something we might consider more of later on.
Finally we actually had some of that thing called work. Princess Two in the Caribbean was within days without a crew — Mel biting the bullet, agreed to come along for 4 weeks to cook.
Leaving the boys for such a time was a very big decision, but with our delightful La Paz friends and children Igor and Daniella we could feel they were in very safe hands.
Princess Two was in St Thomas the US Virgin Islands, the first demonstration trip was cancelled and the second charter with guest from Mexico city is best not talked about we did our best in trying conditions with untrained crew — the fact that the two Mexican crew were left tips and the 3 Anglo Saxons were not says it all — funny to experience a little discrimination on our side, makes one respect what other non-white Anglo Saxon cultures have to deal with.
Our taxi driver, Sobers, providing me with several hours of laughs as we went shopping for parts and food. With 4 crew for the mile trip from St Thomas to the Bahamas a couple of long nights, made longer by the 10 minute departure in the Turks and Caicos of the rather useless South African stewardess.
Now in Hurricane Hole Marina for the last day of a very quick two day hand over to the 4 new crew. Cipriano, our hard working and delightful Mexican mariner will stay until the boat heads to Florida in April.
Looking forward to being back on Sonrisa with the boys and Peluchie for the normal Easter cruise.
As with last year we headed out to Playa Bonanza for a family week over Christmas. Clear sunny, blue skies, a magic empty beach and just a few other yachts around made for a delightful and relaxing time.
Trips to see the de commissioned aircraft carrier Midway and a trip to the expansive San Diego Zoo were the touristy highlights. Our Friends Alex and Dariella sold us their old Mitsubishi Montero, which will deal with the Mexican roads and crazy traffic much better than the aging Subaru.
By train we headed north for a few days to Santa Barbara to see our old friends Kevin and Carolyn — what a magic house they have near the beach, with many Asian touches from their house in Bali.
We all had fun in this tranquil town, Mel particularly enjoying the shopping! After getting the Montero serviced we cruised down to La Paz via Mexico Highway 1 in sections worse than our country road to Bream Creek in Tasmania very dangerous and really a poor excuse for a highway.
Three nights along the way in San Quintin, San Ignacio and Loreto were magic, each hotel having plenty of character and hospitality.
The boys finally got back to school a week late but the travels more than made up for it, though they did seem to spend most of their time watching videos or on the Kindle.
A rather quiet few months during autumn, such a quick change from the hot summer. Daylight saving has finished, so dark mornings are over and the evenings are considerably longer, delightful to lie back on a cool evening with a good book.
I, unfortunately, was doing something rather strange — working. Thankfully only a few short trips involved as I would not last any longer!
The boys continue to progress well at school, their Spanish well ahead of mine. For Christmas we will head out to anchor for a week, very quiet and relaxing away from the, already, overwhelming commercial shit.
The fifth and sixth digit of the serial number reading '21' are made at the Unsung plant. My trading feedback is here. I bought it because I'd played a few Casinos but had heard about the apparent superiority of the Peerless models so took a chance on ebay.
In short, it was a complete dog. Not much of a player and it sounded awful. The P90s were high output It's ended up having the following upgrades: Pickups rebuilt by Hayden at Bulldog neck - alnico 3 magnet, 6.
The end result was much better. It feels good and plays well. I'm going to have to get another new nut because the top E falling off the fret edge happens a lot and it drives me mad - I didn't really mind the narrow nut only noticed it when I measured it!
The sound is still an order of magnitude less bright than any of my other guitars. I'm convinced that plastic covers would help a bit but sourcing them is equally difficult.
So there, in an exceedingly large nutshell, is my experience. However, I have found out that there are Peerless Casinos out there with wider nut widths and vintage output pickups so you might be lucky and find one of them.
Or, even better, if I'd waited about a month, they released the reissue Casino - USA P90s again and a nicer finish. These now sell for more than they did new and the one I played was great, a much better sounding guitar than mine.
The neck join isn't an issue either way for me. The Peerless has a medium neck that I definitely prefer but I can gladly live with a slim profile like the one on my Yamaha SA semi if the sound and playablity are good.
The pickups were like Basher's and the thing sounded as dull as dull can be. Ironically, I bought a pair of generic Epiphone Casino pickups from Ebay and the improvement was amazing!
November edited November I had 2 MIC Casinos a couple of years ago. The pickups are too hot and a bit muddy but after having those rewound to vintage spec there's very little that needed anything beyond a good setup.
I think stickyfiddle has nailed it - the differences are certainly not as "night and day" as some would have us think.
I've also read that more recent MIC pickups are better - lower output and cleaner sounding, although I can't find that so don't quote me on that.
It might explain why dogload experienced such an improvement. Search in titles only Search in Electric Guitars only Search. In researching Epiphone Casinos, I find that, almost universally, people prefer the guitars made at Korea's Peerless factory over just about everywhere else other than the MIJ Elitists.
I'm just curious as to what makes them superior - hopefully someone here has played both the Peerless MIKs and others perhaps the MIC models and can quantify the differences for me.
The modern conservative is engaged in one of man's oldest exercises in moral philosophy; that is, the search for a superior moral justification for selfishness.
Good Quality craftsmanship and QC is what set Peerless apart. They give a damn about what they build. Thanks for the input, but I don't really know what "better quality" and "quality craftsmanship" means, compared to their non-Peerless counterparts.
Thinner finishes and a more natural, almost nitro like feel. Perfect frets, no finish overruns, everything lines up like it should. Like an English shotgun.
The finish was completely flawless and, like Sheraton said, it felt quite thin and didn't look globbed on and "plastic-y" like a lot of the other poly finished Epis I've owned, most of which have been the newer MIC ones.
The guitar was also flawlessly constructed. The pickups were also fantastic, as was the fret work. You may not get your favorite guitar when you order it from this reason. The P90s were high output I had a Peerless Riviera and it was great. Ja, mein Passwort ist: Tuners have been upgraded so she stays in tune. Yes, that's what I meant - I got them confused. The guitar is featherweight at 6lbs 10oz.
